Todays images are of the Saw Mill ‘Salamander’ taken during National Mill Day on 12 May 2012.
Each year on ‘National Mill Day’ (Nationale Molendag) many of the Netherlands windmills are open for viewing by the public.
The Saw Mill ‘Salamander’ (Houtzaagmolen De ‘Salamander’) is a fantastic example of its type and can be found at a beautiful location by the water in Leidschendam.
Twenty five years ago the Saw Mill ‘Salamander’ was in a very poor state of repair and came very close to being demolished and gone forever. Then about this time the ‘Stichting Opbouw Salamander’ was established, the ‘Stichting Opbouw Salamander’ managed to save what was remaining of the dilapidated mill and by 1989 after securing the necessary funding the Saw Mill ‘Salamander’ was rebuilt on a new site utilising the parts that had been saved from the original building.
For those that would like to visit The Saw Mill ‘Salamander’ there is no need to wait until the next National Mill Day, the Saw Mill ‘Salamander’ is open to the public every Wednesday and Saturday, 2pm to 4pm for viewing.
